Sullivan Lexington
Helen Bongard, Esq., Chair of the Paralegal Studies Department,
has been chosen as the recipient of the Kentucky Association of
the Colleges and Employers (KACE) Outstanding Faculty Award for
2008. Helen is also a member of the Greater Lexington Paralegal Association (GLPA) and, in 2007, was recognized as ‘The Most Supportive Attorney.’ Helen partners with the GES office in both the institutional membership with GLPA and conducting outreach with legal employers.
We are very appreciative of all she does for Sullivan University and look forward to collaborating with her in the future. Congratulations, Helen!

Don Justice, I.T. Academy Director, was the recipient of the Top 10 Leadership Award at the Technology Network (TeN) awards banquet on September 26. The Top 10 Awards, presented by Greater Louisville Inc.'s technology network, recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding achievements in technology intensive projects or initiatives.

The 2008 Senior Olympic Games were held in Ashland, Ky. (9/17-9/21). Ron Chilton of LTI captured Gold Medals in the 100, 200, 400, 800 meter dashes, plus the long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, & javelin in the age group of 70-74.
Ron strongly encourages everyone to begin and maintain a regular exercise program (whatever you can tolerate). You’ll find that you have more energy to accomplish daily tasks and a more positive & enthusiastic outlook on life in general.

Tony Belak, authored an article in the Association for Conflict Resolution spring issue entitled “Creating a Federal Shared Neutral Program.” ACR is an international professional organization dedicated to enhancing the practice and public understanding of conflict resolution. Tony’s article describes the shared mediator program he created in Louisville for all federal agencies, the largest in the nation and one of the most successful with over an 80% success rate.

Steve Weissmueller, recently defended his dissertation to earn his doctorate in Curriculum and Design from U of K. Dr. Weissmueller’s
dissertation study examined the impact of learning technology on
beginning accounting students.
Sullivan Louisville Mike Daniel, Director of General Education Mike Daniel recently defended his dissertation to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Louisville in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development. His dissertation topic was Faculty and Academic Administrator Attitudes Concerning the Importance of Outcomes Assessment Activities.

Paralegal student Masako Takai was selected to receive the Greater Lexington Paralegal Association's 2008 scholarship. Masako will be honored at the GLPA's holiday luncheon on December 3rd.
Sullivan Mock Trial Wins Award at MTSU
Amy Messner, a member of the Sullivan University-Lexington’s mock trial team, won a Best Attorney Award at the Middle Tennessee State University Mock Trial Tournament held Nov. 14-15 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Fifty teams representing 29 colleges and universities from 10 different states competed at the tournament. The Sullivan Mock Trial Team took ballots from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga and Kennesaw State University and lost a ballot to Elon University by one point. MTSU won the tournament, going undefeated at 8-0.
In addition to Messner, students representing Sullivan’s Lexington campus at this tournament were Chip Boone, Jannesy Estes, Kelsey Nicholson, Laura Robinson, Chie Hattori and Mercedes Figueroa who are coached by Mike Wilson.
Mock trial is a nationwide competition for undergraduate students. This year’s case is a lawsuit for defamation of character.

Sullivan University’s Mock Trial team won awards at Eastern Kentucky University’s mock trial tournament held October 25-26. Jannesy Estes won a best attorney award and Chip Boone won a best witness award.
Sullivan took two ballots from University of Miami at Ohio, one ballot from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), and tied Bellarmine University on a ballot. Sullivan finished in a tie with Duke University. The tournament was won by Washington University.
In addition to Estes and Boone, students representing Sullivan at this tournament were Amy Messner, Kelsey Nicholson, Laura Robinson, Chie Hattori and Mercedes Figuerosa.

Moving your body can help you feel better
Sullivan to host Moving Moods: a new kind of wellness fair on Wednesday, November 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Louisville, KY – Sullivan University has teamed up with Restoration House and Baptist Hospital East to bring you the Moving Moods sequential Wellness Fair. The program uses demonstration and participation to encourage the use of physical activity in your lifestyle as a way to relieve depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

College of Pharmacy - Sullivan to dedicate College of Pharmacy building
Sullivan University will hold a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday for its College of Pharmacy building at 2100 Gardiner Lane. Classes at the new college started in July on Sullivan’s main campus on Bardstown Road, then moved into the new building early this month. The first class has 74 doctor of pharmacy students.
Sullivan acquired, renovated and expanded an office building on Gardiner Lane to house the pharmacy college, Louisville’s first since 1947. The school occupies about 40,000 square feet but could expand into additional space as it grows.
Until the Sullivan college opened, the University of Kentucky operated the state’s only pharmacy college.
Sullivan University System Global e-Learning - Dr. Anthony“Tony” Pina’s book Distance Learning and the Institution: Foundations, Importance and Implementation is now available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Dr. Pina is the new Dean of Global e-Learning for the Sullivan University System. He has taught at the secondary, college and university levels and has developed and taught many online and blended courses. He has been a professional consultant to Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, university consortia and the U.S. Military.
In this book, Dr. Pina examines the history and practice of technology-delivered learning and identifies thirty factors that influence the institutionalization of distance learning at educational institutions. In two nationwide research studies, distance learning faculty and leaders validate the importance of these factors and rate how well each of the factors has-been implemented at their own institutions. The results can provide guidance for those establishing-Learning/distance learning programs and can be utilized in the evaluation, improvement and institutionalization of existing programs.
College of Pharmacy - Dr. ML Coronel, Associate Professor at the Sullivan College of Pharmacy recently organized and encouraged her College of Pharmacy Anatomy & Physiology students to see the “Bodies” Exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. The exhibit concluded September 1, 2008.

College of Pharmacy - After years of preparation and anticipation, during our Orientation days on July 2 and 3, 2008, the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy welcomed the Inaugural Class of 2011 (Entering July 7, 2008).
It was a successful and happy event! Mr. Mike Burleson, R.Ph., Executive Director of the Kentucky State Board of Pharmacy, was the guest speaker. Dr. Renee Rust-Yarmuth delivered the invocation, and President Glenn Sullivan, Dr. Steve Coppock, and Dr. Jerry Miller (Chairman of Board of Sullivan University System) provided wonderful welcoming speeches. We would like to share this word of thank you with our Sullivan University System friends and colleagues, and would like to especially thank Jim Klein, Director of
Academic Services, Terri Thomas, Director of Admissions, Jay Marr,
Vice President for Student Services/Dean of Students and their respective support staff who lent a helping hand to make this Orientation successful. A wonderful lunch was also provided by Juleps, and we thank Tracy Badenhausen and her staff for their assistance in making our new students feel welcome.
